Finnish National Gallery

The Finnish National Gallery comprises of three museums: Ateneum Art Museum, the Kiasma museum of contemporary art and Sinebrychoff Art Museum.

The National art museum became the Finnish National Gallery in 2014. The National Gallery is an independent public foundation, whose primary duty is to maintain our national heritage of shared art treasures, i.e. the State Art Collection. The Finnish National Gallery also organizes exhibits and research activities, and participates in the development of the field and societal discussions as an expert on the art museum field.

The Collection

The collection of the Finnish National Gallery is the backbone of our national cultural heritage. By exploring our collection and viewing the works the public is provided the opportunity to experience and interpret both the visual arts and the surrounding world.

The Finnish National Gallery’s collection is also a subject of active scientific research. Our collection is featured prominently nationally, internationally and increasingly also in the digital environment. With the innovative collection activities, we reinforce our partnerships and widen our collaboration both locally and globally. At the moment, new relationships are especially being established in Eastern Asia.

The Finnish National Gallery’s collection is grown justifiably and deliberately, while strengthening its physical and digital accessibility. We invest in the development of collection management and the finest expertise in the country. Our focus is on the quality of digital materials, diversity, and the use of open data.

Do you love the jewels of the collection, the national treasures and the future classics?

The People

The Finnish National Gallery’s employees are a group of top experts on the international level. The chief curators are in charge of designing the exhibitions, while curators participate in the planning and provide new perspectives to the works for the public. Educational curators design and execute, for example, art workshops, while conservators maintain our national heritage to preserve it for future generations. Technicians are in charge of building the framework for the exhibitions and the guides provide the audience detailed insight into the exhibits.

The museum buildings are maintained by professionals, who handle day-to-day matters and monitor the museums’ air conditioning, which is extremely important. The digital collection is developing and flourishing due to the combined efforts of collection management professionals and data administration experts.

The Society

Finnish art has always had a strong social impact. The whole core of Finnish culture is illustrated by classical works. The inspiration for the first steps of our independence was based on the messages created by our heroes of visual arts and music.

Social activities play an important part of the Finnish National Gallery’s work. Each year over 100,000 children and youths visit our museums free of charge and we collaborate closely with schools to build platforms for new types of dialogue. We also provide different ways for the elderly to explore both our history and the present day on different stages. This is our way of activating and providing experiences, preventing marginalization, and creating equal opportunities for everyone.

Our complete collection of works of art is also available digitally: this way we can provide everyone with an online connection the opportunity to dive in to the world of art and participate in the social discussion, crossing all borders.

Would you like to support influence and drive the social discussion?
